Flash Calls: to Bill or not to Bill

Flash calls are a fast and cheap user verification method that profits service providers. However, they disrupt operators' SMS revenues. Operators struggle to monetize flash calls so they often block them.

1

Juniper Research predicted that global flash call volume will increase 25 times from 2022 to 2026, from 5 to 130 billion calls.

2

On average, a European Tier-1 operator could lose 450 000 USD per month unless they find a way to monetize flash calls.

3

To move forward, flash call providers and operators must find common ground and discuss the topic openly.

Key points include:

Main features, trends, and parties involved in flash calling

The operator’s dilemma: blocking vs. billing flash calls

Current flash call billing models and possible improvements

Flash call provider’s perspective vs. operator’s perspective

MEF’s impartial view of flash calls and their legal environment

Markus Balasus — Operators’ perspective

Voice & Mobile Services Product Manager at Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier

After studying Telecommunications Engineering in Berlin in the late 1980s, Markus started his career at Deutsche Telekom. Markus Balasus is busy in IP voice product management, working with VoLTE, HD Voice and now exploring Flash Calls at GSMA, MEF and so on.

“We would not offer Flash Calling as a service. We see it as a technical evolution and as an opportunity to look for monetization solutions.”

James Williams — Balanced perspective

Director of Programmes at MEF

He will present balanced insights on flash calls that he gained from MEF.

“It’s clear there is a huge knowledge gap globally about the topic of A2P Flash and MEF members felt they had to step in and fill this gap.”

Markus Balasus — Operators’ perspective

Voice & Mobile Services Product Manager at Deutsche Telekom Global Carrier

Carlos heads up Mobility Products for PCCW Global, which is an affiliate of HKT, and part of the PCCW Group.
